The Dangers of Chemical Pesticides, Herbicides and Fertilizers

Here at the Green Restaurant Association, we all believe in the benefits of eating Organic - as much as possible.

One of the reasons is that it is much more natural this way. We have been growing organic food since the agricultural revolution - about 10-12,000 years ago. It was only since the beginning in the 20th century - with the introduction of the industrialization of agriculture - when farming began to incorporate the use of chemical pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. 

Unfortunately, these recent developments in agriculture have been linked to things such as Cancer, Soil erosion, Water pollution, Air pollution via burning fossil fuels, Loss of biodiversity, Long-term economic losses through resource exploitation and more.

Many pesticides that have been approved for use by the EPA were registered before any extensive research have been done - before any linking of these chemicals to cancer and other diseases had been established. 

Now the EPA considers that close to 60% of all herbicides, 90% of all fungicides, and 30% of all insecticides are carcinogenic. 

The simple truth is that pesticides are poisons designed to kill living organisms. They have demonstrated harmful effects to humans and our environment. In addition to cancer, pesticides are implicated in birth defects, nerve damage and genetic mutation.
